Wednesday's night debate on whether to spend money to further study the feasability of an arts centre and a multi-use facility made me angry.

Sometimes it is necessary for politicians to do the right thing, even if at the time, there is opposition. There was opposition to Science North and the Jim Gordon walkway at Bell Park and look how important these things are to citizens.

Several councillors said they would rather spend money on roads than arts and recreation. They can spend on roads forever and they will only be used by wealthy people to drive away from the city seeking things they can't find here.

Councillors had an opportunity to speak on quality of life issues. Roads will not make Greater Sudbury a better place to live. They will only allow more urban sprawl, which in the long run is not substainable, and will only need to be repaired again and again.

Greater Sudbury recently was rated 27 out of 27 in substainable cities in Ontario. But no politician is bragging about it.

The councillors at the table who voted against proceeding with the arts/recreational centres are old fashioned and inward thinking. They should be ashamed of themselves.

Councillors who spoke for the motion are progressive, and they deserve our support.

Many people voted for Mayor Rodriguez because of his support for a performing arts centre and a multi use sports facility.

The councillors who voted against progress are out of touch.
