Bah humbug! January stinks. Blue Monday, the most depressing day of the year, will take place on Jan. 19. Some experts at a university in Wales have determined this date due to such factors as broken new year’s resolutions; inclement weather and a flurry of holiday bills. Everyone has a holiday hangover or a cold.
The second annual Workplace Blues Survey recently conducted by Harris/Decima on behalf of Ontario’s Everest College reveals that between work and the economy,
Canadians have even more to be depressed about this year as we approach the dreaded Blue Monday.
The survey shows 66 percent of Canadians blame work or the economy for giving them the blues. Canadians are also more unhappy on the job than last year and many are terrified of losing their job.
Nearly three-quarters of Canadians (71 percent) say they suffer at least occasional bouts of work-induced blues, up from last year’s number of 63 per cent. More than half of Canadians (57 percent) say they are not at all optimistic they would get a promotion in the next year. Thirty-three percent of Canadians are fearful they would not be able to find a new job if they were to look, with Ontarians being most concerned (39 percent).
