Event marketers honoured

Special events in Sudbury last year brought in 210,000 participants, filled more than 30,000 hotel rooms and accounted for more than $44 million in direct spending, supporting hundreds of local jobs.
Four business groups and event organizers were honoured recently by Greater Sudbury Tourism and its partners at the annual Invite the World event at Science North.


Winners were chosen in four categories:


Sporting Events: Big Nickel Hockey Tournament 30th Anniversary
Celebrating its 30th Anniversary in 2009, the Big Nickel Major “AAA” Hockey Tournament is an annual Hockey Tournament that hosts the best peewee, bantam and midget talent that the province has to offer. In 2009 the event took place Nov.5 -8 in various arenas in Greater Sudbury with more than 2,500 players, participants and spectators.


Meetings and Conventions: Sudbury Gem and Mineral Show
The Sudbury Gem and Mineral Show is an annual event that takes place in Greater Sudbury every year for 27 years.The Sudbury Gem and Mineral. Show is held every year in mid July at the Carmichael Arena, and continues to grow each year. The three day convention provides rock and lapidary professionals and amateur enthusiasts the opportunity to visit and trade at Northern Ontario's Largest Jewellery, Mineral and Rock Craft Show and Sale. Hosted by the Sudbury Rock & Lapidary Society, the convention welcomes more than 2,000 people.


Arts, Culture & Heritage: Cinéfest International Film Festival
Cinéfest Sudbury International Film Festival has become one of the most popular and most anticipated cultural events in Northern Ontario.


New Events: Downtown Sudbury Ribfest
Downtown Sudbury Ribfest is a new event in Sudbury that began in 2008, attracting thousands of people into the downtown core for three days over the Labour Day weekend.
