Deep, jewel-like colours, such as CIL Fashion Passion (DL38) – featured on the walls of this bedroom – create a vibrant, lavish mood in a room.

Having trouble selecting the right paint colour for your room? Then, get in the mood.
That’s the advice of leading Canadian paint brand CIL Paints, which says that choosing a mood for a room is the easiest way to start the colour selection process.
“Studies show that even once in store, many consumers still don’t know what paint colour to buy, yet almost everyone can describe what kind of feeling they would like to create in their room,” says Jennifer Jones, marketing communications manager of CIL Paints. To this end, CIL has launched a new website (www.cil.ca), featuring a unique tool to help consumers choose colours based on mood.
The website offers a “mood test,” which walks visitors through a series of images and asks them to click on their favourite ones. The test results reveal a person’s décor taste and users are directed to a colour palette to help them create their desired ambience. Visitors can put together their own swatch of colours that are guaranteed to co-ordinate, or opt to have the site’s Colour Coordinator recommend personalized colour schemes in real-time.
“The whole idea of the mood test is to make the paint selection process simpler,” Jones said, who emphasizes that most people cite choosing a wall colour as the hardest part of a paint project. “From the comfort of home, with a few clicks of a mouse, we’re helping people turn a feeling into a fabulous look,” she added, explaining that test user feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.
Jones suggests these stylish colour combinations, depending on the mood you’re looking to create:
Clean and playful: Mix sunny yellows with warm grays, or light corals with crisp neutrals, to deliver a fresh yet invigorating feeling to your room.
Soft and elegant: If you’re looking for sophisticated elegance, colours such as aqua green mixed with mocha or dusty rose combined with light gray, work well in creating a calm and peaceful yet classic environment.
Mellow and comforting: Combinations of warm shades such as gold, wine, slate brown and teal help make a room feel both inviting and relaxing at the same time.
Deep and Luxurious: To bring a vibrant, lavish feel to a room, introduce a mix of plush, jewel-like colours – whether applied on all walls, or simply on one wall and highlighted with accessories. Think jade green, ruby red, deep purple and chocolate brown.
Each of these mood categories is reflected in CIL’s four colour collections, which highlight hundreds of possible colour choices. To make the selection process even simpler, the colours in each of CIL’s collections contain different symbols that are easily mixed and matched with colours containing the same symbols in the other collections.
“No matter what mood you choose for your rooms, CIL wants to ensure that consumers are in a good mood when undertaking a paint project,” Jones said. “Enhancing the décor in your home should be a positive experience, so CIL has done everything possible to make the process as easy as possible.”
