The gift from Power Corporation of Canada is earmarked towards graduate fellowships. Laurentian now offers 20 masters and 7 PhD programs. Applications from graduate students are up 51 percent this year, for the same number of spaces available. "We are pleased to build upon the long-lasting relationship between the Desmarais family, Power Corporation and Laurentian University," explained Gérard Veilleux, president of Power Communications Inc.
"Laurentian's is the go-to resource for research and employees for companies like FNX," says Terry MacGibbon, chair and CEO of FNX Mining in a news release.
Laurentian confirmed that the Next 50 Campaign, the most ambitious fundraising campaign ever
undertaken in Northern Ontario, has now raised $32 million of its ambitious $50 million goal.
It also announced that the Next 50 Campaign Cabinet had been expanded from six to 28
volunteers. Laurentian alumni Jamie Wallace (President, Pioneer Construction Inc.), Scott
MacDonald and Lou Pagnutti (CEO, Ernst & Young Canada) serve respectively as honorary chair,
chair and treasurer of the campaign.
