Sudbury's Jubilee Folk Ensemble presented an afternoon of music and poetry, Sunday. Jan. 31.

The community orchestra, conducted by Oryst Sawchuk, performed music to complement the words of poets Robert Burns, Pablo Neruda, Taras Shevchenko and Walt Whitman.

The afternoon performance was hosted by Sudbury poet Roger Nash. Poets were performed by Ron Tough (Burns), Alex Martinez (Neruda), Wilfred Szczesny (Shevchenko) and John Lindsay (Whitman).

The poets selected for this special event are well known for their contributions to their homelands and the world.

"Before recorded music, poetry was the 'folk music' of the people. Poets' words changed the way people thought, and often were part of social and political movements that led to positive change. They were the Dylans and Lennons of earlier generations," said Sawchuk. "We think the works by the "Poets Who Changed the World" still have relevance."

The orchestra meets every Monday evening at the Jubilee Centre for rehearsals. For more information, phone 674-3590.
