The Winter 2011 issue of Sudbury Living features the photography of Rob Provencher.

Provencher visited the Commonwealth cemeteries in Europe and created a powerful visual memorial to Canada's fallen heroes.

Provencher was impressed with the the National Vimy Ridge Memorial in France. The names of 11,285 soldiers who were killed in France in the First World War are recorded on the stone monument.

The monument was unveiled in 1936 on the eve of another war. In 1940 Adolf Hitler visited the memorial. The visit, which would have hurt morale on the homefront was not reported in Canadian newspapers, but widely reported in Germany, according to Sudbury Living editor Vicki Gilhula.

Hilter, a German soldier in the First World War, was said to have admired the monument to peace. During the German occupation of France, Hitler ordered security to prevent the monument from being defaced or destroyed.

The Winter issue of Sudbury Living has a cover story on Sudbury Wolves coach Trent Cull written by sports reporter Scott Haddow, and a extended holiday gift guide.

“Readers will also enjoy a travel feature by Jean Hanson. She visited New Zealand shortly after she retired from the Rainbow Board of Education last year,” says Gilhula.

The cover price of Sudbury Living is $3.95. It is available at Chapters, Black Cat, Kitchen Bits, The Art Gallery of Sudbury, and other selected newsstands in the city.

A special two for one subscription offer is available now until Dec. 16.
