The only thing that grabs attention quicker than Kelsey Aho’s rock star image is the heavy, sweet sound that radiates from her petite frame. Standing front and centre, flanked by Steve Costello on guitar, Dustin Campbell on drums and Kory Hawes on bass, Aho is the voice of May Day Mother.

With their self-titled EP out since May and their song Detonator on its way to radio, the Sudbury-based band is looking toward a bright future.

“Watch out, ‘cause here we come,” Aho said with just the right amount of confidence.

Since partnering with Costello and Campbell about two years ago, and picking up Hawes in August 2009, the “fresh, cutting edge” sound of May Day Mother has been refined and rocked up by the husband-and-wife management team of Angela Marie and Scott Donnelly of Super Stack Productions.

“We met them and fell in love with them, and we’ve been together ever since,” Angela Marie said.

From Scott’s experience working with musicians, he said, “I haven’t seen too many bands around here that can do what they can do.”

Piecing together their catchy rocker sound while all four members of the band were in school full time speaks volumes about their dedication. With high school out of the way for three-quarters of the group, their primary focus can shift more heavily to music.

With a cross-country tour on their radar, and plans to write their first full-length album, focusing on their music careers sounds about right.

Aho said the band already spends four to six days a week together, but keeping their common goal ahead of them steers them away from any trouble.

“We love each other, and even when we hate each other, we love each other.”

Aho said the boys of the band do “a lot more together stuff,” but she prefers her space when she’s writing and making music.

“I like to be isolated more when I do my work,” she said.

Aho writes all the lyrics to May Day Mother’s songs.

“I usually get comfortable all by myself, make sure it’s quiet, listen to (a song) over and over again, and sometimes I can almost see (the words) racing through my mind until I catch them and put them on paper,” Aho said.

Angela Marie said each of the members of the band comes from a slightly different musical background, and are able to contribute their own style to the group.

“(Aho) has such a rock 'n’ roll flair to her,” Angela Marie said.

The little leading lady said Hawes came to the group at a time when their sound wasn’t quite right.

“We went through a few bass players, and we couldn’t find one that fit,” she said. “When we got Kory, it all just pieced together.”

Costello and Campbell have known each other since they were kids, so the relationship they have forms the core of the group.

With everyone’s contribution, Aho said the group is looking forward to what comes next.

Playing at the level she’s playing at today is something she wanted to aspire to, as little as a year ago.

“It was just something I was dreaming and hoping, maybe one day that would happen.”
