Getaways: North

Summer 2008 |

Two provincial parks mark natural stops along Highway 144 north toward Timmins. Windy Lake Provincial Park is a mere 45 minutes from Greater Sudbury. Another 45 minutes down the road, there’s Halfway Lake Provincial Park. At either spot, you can get a day pass and relax on sandy beaches, or plan longer stays in their scenic campgrounds.

Once you arrive in Timmins, visit the Shania Twain Centre. A Northern Ontario favourite, this major attraction is a tribute to the Timmins girl who spent part of her teens living in Greater Sudbury. The Shania Twain Centre is packed with personal items (including her wedding dress) and professional memorabilia (including over $1 million worth of video and stage costumes.)
This is a fascinating look at her life and career.
Fans can attend the Sixth Annual Worldwide Shania Twain Centre Fan Convention, from Aug 7 to 10.

The Timmins Underground Gold Mine Tour takes visitors 61 metres down a mine shaft to view the gold mining process from extraction to gold bricks.

Follow that with a tour of Hollinger House. Built in the 1920s, it’s loaded with exhibits depicting the life
and times of gold miners at the turn of the century.

The Timmins Museum National Exhibition Centre is a further look into the mining process.
Various galleries within the centre display historical items of interest plus the works of local and regional artists.

Discovering Timmins is easy and enjoyable.

There are any number of self-guided tour options to locations including art studios and historical and architectural sites.

Visitors who prefer guided tours will enjoy the Rio Tinto Minerals, Luzenac Incorporated Timmins Micronizing Mill Tour, available every second Friday in July and August.

The Cedar Meadows Wildlife Park offers guided tours twice daily all summer. This ecotourism facility is an excellent opportunity for children to see 15 different species of wildlife. The park offers a true picture of the ecological, biological and historical elements of the area.

While in Timmins, set aside one day for golf at Spruce Needles Golf Club and another day at the Hollinger Golf Club.

Campers can set up a travel base at Kettle Lakes Provincial Park.  This northern jewel has 22 lakes to explore and 137 campsites within its boundary.

After your visit to Timmins, take a quick side trip to Kirkland Lake for a tour through the Museum of Northern History, located in the Sir Harry Oakes Chateau. While in Kirkland Lake, make sure you stop by Hockey Heritage North.

This popular northern attraction highlights the amazing stories and interesting anecdotes that explain how the north produced some of the best hockey players in the world.

This 18,000 square foot interactive facility is a veritable showcase for hockey in northeastern Ontario.
